About Counselling #01

Counselling Therapy in Ayrshire and the Clyde Coast Area

Counselling offers you a quiet space where you can talk to a professionally qualified counsellor about the issues in your life that may be troubling you or causing you distress.

Counselling is a talking therapy and is based on developing a caring, trusting working relationship between client and counsellor. Within the security of this supportive, therapeutic relationship, where the counsellor offers attentive and non-judgemental listening and reflection, you can feel safe to talk freely and to share your difficulties.

Counselling can help you to see things more clearly. With the counsellor alongside you in your exploration, it can help you to see things from another perspective, to perhaps understand the underlying causes of your difficulties and reduce confusion thus enabling you to make choices that seem right for you.

Counselling is confidential and this is a vital aspect of the working relationship. Counsellors always aim to protect the details of the work. The only circumstances in which a counsellor would consider breaching confidentiality would be if it was clear that someone was at immediate risk of serious harm or death or a danger to self or others. Should this arise, the counsellor would discuss this with you and, hopefully, a mutually agreed course of action would be taken. Counsellors do not make a decision to breach confidentiality lightly and, in the rare and exceptional instances of having to do this, only those who absolutely need to be informed would be told.

Counselling does not involve giving advice or telling you what to do.

Counselling can also be a place where you can do some self-exploration or personal development.

Having a safe place to explore your issues within a supportive, therapeutic relationship can help you to:

  • draw upon your own resources
  • enable you to have greater understanding of your experiences
  • promote self-awareness and acceptance
  • empower you to make your own choices and control your life

Whether you decide to come and talk about a particular concern or whether you would like to begin your own personal, developmental journey, counselling offers you a space where this can happen.
